America’s 10 Healthiest Communities

Los Alamos County, N.M.—where the atomic bomb was developed during World War II—is now the healthiest county in the country, according to a new analysis by U.S. News & World Report. The area boasts abundant outdoor recreational activities and scores high on other determinants of residents’ health, according to the analysis.

U.S. News & World Report evaluated economic, educational, and environmental factors in compiling its third annual Healthiest Communities rankings. The publication analyzed 3,000 counties across the country, factoring in 84 health and wellness metrics, including food, nutrition, and housing.

The following are America’s 10 Healthiest Communities for 2020, according to U.S. News & World Report:

  1. Los Alamos County, N.M.
  2. Douglas County, Colo.
  3. Falls Church, Va.
  4. Broomfield County, Colo.
  5. Routt County, Colo.
  6. Loudoun County, Va.
  7. Pitkin County, Colo.
  8. Carver County, Minn.
  9. Summit County, Colo.
  10. San Miguel County, Colo.
