Germ-Free Doors Offered in New Homes

The healthy-home movement is gaining traction, and more builders are offering products to help owners maintain cleaner homes. KB Home announced this week that it will offer door hardware on its new homes that has antimicrobial product protection. KB will be using the door hardware from Kwikset, which manufacturers products with antimicrobial coating that prevents the growth of bacteria. The antimicrobial protection is to be for the lifetime of the products, even when used in high-traffic areas like bedrooms and bathrooms. Kwikset’s website says bacteria on unprotected surfaces can double every 20 minutes, but the company asserts its antimicrobial coating on its door hardware will never wash off and will continuously fight off germs. KB Home has undertaken several initiatives in recent years to feature more sustainable home building products in its homes, marketing features under the categories of energy efficiency, water conservation, healthy homes, and smart homes. KB touts offerings such as low-VOC interior paint and carpeting, sealed combustion appliances, and MERV 8-rated air filters with a whole-house mechanical ventilation system. KB Home received the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Indoor airPLUS Leader Award in 2015, becoming the first national builder recognized for its commitment to improve indoor air quality.
